The amazing and brilliant Stephanie Nelson (aka Coupon Mom) presents tips on how to save money on your child’s birthday party without making your child (or their friends) feel like you’re selling the event short.  Granted, there are some times when a do-it-yourself birthday party works out well (see the movie Parenthood), but there are other times when it can go horribly wrong.  Like when the frugal father donned his Toucan Sam costume from several Halloweens ago and inadvertently was beaten unconscious by an over-riled group of 7-year-olds.    A word of caution from the authors here at ihowtovideos.  Coupon Mom shared no such stories.

A frustrated mother implores the Coupon Mom – she’s spent over $100 on one child’s party, and she has another one next week.  Is there any way to do it cheaper?  Coupon Mom says yes.  First step, don’t spend a bunch of money on a venue.  Suck it up and do it at home, or at a free park.  Print your own invitations, serve hot dogs, chips, pretzels, and Kool-Aid.  You can feed a slew of kids for just around $5.

Coupon Mom even comes up with a way to still provide party favors for the guests, and prizes for the game.  Since the entertainment and the games are the most important part of the party for the kids, find games you can make up yourself, and that cost little to no money.

Also, a store-bought cake will cost anywhere from $15-$35 dollars.  Grab a box mix and frosting and do it yourself!  Coupon Mom teaches us that you have to work for your savings.  You do, in fact, pay for convenience, but it comes at a real premium.  Just a little bit of forward planning and effort can really make it so you can do amazing things without spending a ton of money.  Thanks, Coupon Mom!
